
Adkins was raised by a young single mother in several working-class neighbourhoods of London. She was a lover of modern pop songs as a child and was proficient at playing the guitar and clarinet. However, it was not until her early teens, when she was introduced to rhythm-and-blues singer Etta James and other mid 20th century artists, that she began to think about pursuing a career in music. When she was in a secondary school of performing arts, which was funded by the government when a friend began uploading songs Adkins had written on Myspace. She was soon discovered by record labels and was signed an agreement with XL Recordings in 2006.
